“Transcendent Beliefs”
is an immersive exploration of the profound spirituality that transcends conventional understanding, weaving together diverse layers of my encompassing work on ‘Spirituality and Beliefs’. This multifaceted exhibition showcases a rich tapestry of African cultures and their deeply rooted spiritual traditions. It offers a window into a world where belief systems extend beyond the boundaries of belief itself.
Each work is a testament to African spiritual practices' resilience, depth, and beauty, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the complexities of faith and spirituality.
The exhibition includes audiovisual presentations that further enhance the immersive experience. Through soundscapes and visual narratives, these presentations offer a deeper insight into the rituals, symbols, and narratives that shape African spirituality.
“Transcendent Beliefs” will challenge viewers to expand their perception of spirituality and embrace the transformative power of belief systems that exist beyond the realm of belief itself. Through lens-based art, this exhibition endeavours to glimpse the boundless depths of the human spirit and embark on a journey of exploration and discovery that transcends the limits of the known and the unknown.
Selected works are from these bodies of work:
- ‘Olókun’- An evocative photo series that delves into the rich tapestry of spirituality and beliefs within the Yoruba traditional religion, known as ‘Isese’ with some images emphasising the pivotal role of women in the practice of ‘Isese’. Bringing a spotlight on women's diverse and integral roles in ‘Isese,’ portraying their involvement in rituals, leadership, and community life.
- ‘Duna Dura’(Negotiation) - Exploring the traditional belief in duality, reincarnation, and supernatural omnipresence ability attributed to the ‘transitioned’ and their existence as living wraiths in African traditional night markets, where strange interactions and eerie transactions happen.
